Charlie Chaplin and Helen Keller

From HistoricLOLs.com:

Charlie Chaplin historian JeTamme Derouet provides some interesting background info for this photo and describes the pair meeting in Hollywood during one of Miss Keller’s speaking tours:

“They spent most of the day off alone together and they smiled and laughed a lot like they had their own private world, just walking the studio lot and talking privately together. (The picture seen here) is of her holding her hand to his mouth to feel what he is saying as he speaks to her.”

To paraphrase Derouet on Chaplin’s interest in sign language:

“Chaplin had worked with several deaf people throughout his career in an effort to improve his own pantomime communication skills and traveled with deaf artist Granville Redmond, who taught Charlie sign language and fingerspelling. He was also a great supporter of the deaf during a time when most people in America were trying to abolish sign language all together.”

Ridiculously good guy Chaplin was a ridiculously good guy.

I loved Chaplin to begin with, but this just makes me love him more.

Attention to the Deaf on Tumblr:

Where you at least 17/18 years old in 1988?
Do you remember the Deaf President Now Protest?

If you so you can help me with my ASL homework! Yay!

Seriously, this is due tomorrow and I need to interview someone for this. You must be deaf/hard of hearing,  and at least 17/18 in 1988.

We can chat on Skype.
Message me your username and I’ll send you mine. We’ll have a grand time. And by time, I really mean no more than 20 minuets. And you’ll help me get a good grade with this. And it’d due tomorrow, so I have to finish it tonight. (I know, tsk tsk at my procrastination.) I’m free all night, so lets have a chat.

Here’s a link to my ask box; drop your Skype name in there: http://edensflaw.tumblr.com/ask

(Deaf kids, ask your parents if they’ll help a girl out.)

I am in ASL II, so you’ll have to be forgiving if I sign slow/messy/incorrectly.

THANK YOU!

Lol!
“poop” was the first sign a learned (besides the alphabet, which I already knew before I started taking classes).

In other news: why did I never find fuckyeahasl when i searched the “deaf” tag before?  And now it’s keeping me from my reading…

The Good News: I got my brakes replaced. Yay.

The Bad News: Still haven’t heard from PetSmart…

In Other News:

Sign Language class is fun. It’s small; only six people, including myself. The first day we learned “toilet”, which is important to know in any language. We also learned “diarrhea”, “poop” (which can also be taken as “shit”) and “constipation”. You know, the important stuff. And the alphabet is important, too, I suppose.

So far I like it. I’ll give me something to look forward to on Monday nights until December.

The Worms Go In, The Worms Go Out

The worms play pinochle on your snout.

Next week is kind of a low for me. Winter hours began at work this week, so my hours got cut. Seriously. Next week I have a grand total of four hours. Yes, four. After taxes, that’s barely enough for a tank of gas. And I still haven’t heard anything back from JoAnn’s or that Kennel Assistant position. I’m going to apply at PetSmart tomorrow.

I’m really beginning to hate the carousel. I think the music is making me crazy.

The good news is that on Monday is my first ASL class. And I haven’t heard anything about it being canceled yet, I’m assuming that it’s still going to happen. That I’m excited about. It’s been so long since I’ve been in a classroom setting. And it should be better, I’m hoping, because it’ll be adults who want to take this class, not stupid kids that dick off and make it miserable for the rest of us.

So, yeah.

That’s it, I guess.

It’s Friday:

Yay? I think.

At least I don’t have to work every Friday night anymore, just the first Friday of the month… which is today. Damn. I can’t complain. It’s only 3 hours. And it’s kind of gloomy outside, so maybe people will stay home today.

I did apply for a Kennel Assistant position this morning. And then I’m going to put in another application for JoAnn’s later today. I think my head would explode if I got the KA job.

Oh, and I got more books yesterday. Including The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for… wait for it… $1.00! It’s currently going for $15 on Barnes and Noble’s website, not including shipping. I really love library book sales.

I’m really excited for my ASL classes to begin.

Not looking forward to Labour Day, though. I (surprise, surprise) have to work and it’s free. For everyone. All. Day. Long. I’m going to shoot myself….

I really, really, hope I get hired some where else…

Today:

My grandma paid and registered me for ASL classes at a local high school. I was going to do this anyway, but she offered to pay. My grandma is the best.

So, as long as there’s at least 5 people signed up for the class, I’ll have something to look forward to on Monday nights. I don’t know what number I was, but I wasn’t five, or else the lady wouldn’t have mentioned that fact, I’m guessing.

But I’m rather excited about this. I feel like I’m actually making progress in deciding what to major in.

In other news: still haven’t heard back from JoAnn’s. That makes me sad.

I guess that’s it, for now.

This makes me want to major in ASL even more. This is just, amazing. Not to mention really amusing.

You should watch this video, too: Fairytale.
